A recent survey sponsored by Partnership for Drug -Free Kids revealed that more than 20% of college students abuse prescription stimulants. The students reported using the drugs to help them stay awake, study or improve their school performance. The drugs abused are typically the same as those prescribed for legitimate ADHD patients, such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Vyvanse.
“The profile that emerges is less that of an academic goof-off who abuses prescription stimulants to make up for lost study time than a stressed out multitasked who is burning the candle at both ends and trying to keep up.”
The drugs can be useful for those who suffer from ADHD but the abuse potential can lead to full blown addiction. Stimulant abuse can result in depression, social anxiety, and paranoia. Abuse can also lead to other stimulant drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine.
Red flags that can be present are dilated pupils, anxiety, or manic behavior. Severe sleep disturbances can lead to “crashing” for long periods and difficulty concentrating.
