Jaywalker U students are finishing up with Workshop Wednesday’s next week and will be starting a 6-week class at Colorado Mountain College on Mental Health First Aid. The class will be taught by Janet DeMars, Jaywalker U Program Director, and will be held Wednesday mornings. By the end of the semester JWU students will be Wilderness Advanced First Aid certified as well as Mental Health First Aid certified.

Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Participants in the class will learn the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, build understanding of their impact, and review common treatments. Those who take the 12-hour course will learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

The Jaywalker U students are becoming educated beyond the constraints of the classroom. They are learning how to be of help to those in the wilderness (through Wilderness Advanced First Aid) and to be of help to the people around them that may be dealing with mental health disorders. For those of you who are interested, you can sign up at any Colorado Mountain College campus.
